Project Red Socks
The aim of Red Socks is to promote prostate cancer awareness and encourage men to have regular health checks with their doctor.
Why is it called Red Socks?
In June 2013 long time member of the Townsville Sunrise Rotary Club, Dennis Denmead PHF, passed away as a result of an aggressive Prostate Cancer illness. Dennis was born in England and was a devout supporter of the Arsenal Football Club, and as a result only wore red socks. Red is Arsenal’s primary colour.
Why the project?
The Townsville Sunrise Rotary Club has about 90 male members. Like most Rotary Clubs throughout Australia the majority of members are in the over 50 age bracket. A 2014 survey of club members revealed that 12% of the members received a positive prostate diagnosis resulting in treatment. This is an alarming statistic, particularly when applied to the 25,000 Rotarians throughout Australia.
- 1 in 9 males in Australia will get Prostate Cancer.
- Caused the death of at least 3,300 men in Australia in 2015.
- More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer
- The risk rate increases markedly over 50.
